This is the best basic recipe I’ve ever tried, and I’ve been using it for 34 years.
Preheat oven to 325 degrees F
Take:
2 cups butter at room temp. (not margarine)
2 cups white sugar
cream these together until smooth
Add to the above mixture:
1 cup brown sugar
2 med eggs
1 tsp vanilla (use real vanilla)
Mix well.
Mix in a separate bowl:
4 cups all-purpose flour
1/2 tsp salt (unless the butter is unsalted, then you’ll need to salt to taste)
1 tbsp baking powder
Add wet to dry or dry to wet — it doesn’t matter which.
Mix the cookie dough together.
Finally, add:
A godzillion chocolate chips. (or whatever feels right to you)
Drop by spoonfuls on a cookie sheet, bake ’til they’re done (~10 minutes).
Notes:
Cookies will change in texture, crispness, or gooiness, depending on
1) what size you make ’em
2) how long you bake ’em
3) the temp of the oven
By all means, experiment.
This cookie dough freezes very well.
Have fun!
