After getting the good word from a geekier-than-I friend that Gentoo Linux was perhaps not the distro for a beginner, on his always-trusted advice I picked up Ubuntu Linux, and the install was… ahem… so easy it kinda made my head spin.

So. I now have a Linus box as well as a Windoze box, and since I used to run a Mac, I’ll be a tri-platform nut in no time. Ah, geekery.

So, many years ago, my sweetie Spike gave me an Olympus D-100 1.3 megapixel digital camera for Christmas, sorta as a replacement for my little Olympus 35mm camera, which had died a painful death a few months before.

I’ve always been a shutterbug, but now I went crazy with it, as with rechargeable batteries, the cost of taking pictures went down to only the cost of the electricity to run it.

I took thousands of pictures. Thousands and thousands.

Do you know that as of time of writing, there’s 964 Google hits on a search for the exact phrase “Die, Spammer, Die”…?

Neat, huh?

It’s simple. It’s hard on the eyes. It’s what I’m browsing through with my tea in the morning. I’ll share, if you wanna look.

RSS feeds available will change as I find new ones I like, or discover that I hate the ones I’m trying on a whim.

A post or two ago, I mentioned putting up some ritzy gallery software. It keep looking cool on paper, but has so many troubles in the set up end that I’ve left it be for a while. I’m working on a much larger project, with about a tenth the headache.

I’m filled with the desire to show you all the very first piece of computer art I did, back in 1990 or so…

I drew it, in an idle moment, with the MS Paint program that came with Windows 3.0 or 3.1 (I don’t recall), which was simply a second shell option on my 486/40 Dos machine.

I had 8 MB of RAM. Yes, eight. And a math co-processor! With this machine plus my unheard-of 15″ monitor, I was the envy of all the other computer users.

Heh.

I just found this when I was cleaning up my computer. I have no idea what I was trying to say, but I have a half-trained voice recognition program on my computer, and it has its own ideas about what I’m trying to say.

Virtual Piano actually sounds like a piano. It really does. I can play chords and make awkward tinkling noises and everything.

I have a good friend in this city who has ADHD (making her thrive on
complexity). We both think fast and type fast.

Once upon a time we were each on our respective computers (she didn’t live
here yet), and were having an online conversation.

Well, actually, we were having three conversations. We had two instant
messenger clients open, plus were volleying emails fro and to. Here’s the
funny part. The ICQ conversation was a flirt betwixt the two of us. The
Yahoo! IM conversation was a philosophical debate on the merits of a line
of software. And the email conversation was a sad one, talking about a
friend who’d had some trouble in her life.

We’d talked in this way for some time before I spotted the strangeness of
having three simultaneous *and different* conversations with the same
human.

So, curious as always, I started swapping my responses from one medium to
the other. The ICQ conversation was answered by email. The email went to
Yahoo! IM. Our erstwhile smooth conversations suddenly ground to a halt.

We laughed about the absurdity and intensity of what we’d been doing.

Gawd, I love technology.
