CREATING COMMUNITY THROUGH TECHNOLOGY: A PANEL DISCUSSION

SAT | AUG 23 | 5:00 PM
EMILY CARR UNIVERSITY

Whether it’s to hook up, spread the word or bring together stories and images, queer communities, once isolated from one another by geography and less-than-supportive social climates, are now finding vibrant new spaces online. What are the possibilities of these technologies? What are the challenges and pitfalls? Is technology changing what it means to be queer?
Taking our new interactive website for the Queer History Project as a starting point, this panel will address some of the challenges and opportunities that exist for creating active, productive virtual communities. Learn more about what’s already happening and where we might be going. Laptops are encouraged – wifi is provided!
Panelists include Elaine Miller and Spike Harris, founders of Leatherdyke. com; Cecily Walker, social networking software manager and tech consultant for the Queer History Project; Sarah Leavitt, writer, artist and member of the Queer History Project website development team; Aerlyn Weissman, filmmaker and digital media artist; and Joe Rachert, Promotions Manager, Teligence Communications/ InteractiveMale.com. the discussion will be moderated by Tara Robertson, freelance librarian.
